Walmart payment hold: why your money has not arrived and which kind it is

Walmart can delay a payout through a reserve, a new seller hold, a payment hold or a freeze. How to tell which you have, and what Walmart says ends each.

The short answer

  • Four payment activities to tell apart: a reserve, a new seller hold, a payment hold or a payment freeze. Walmart documents each separately, and they do not end the same way.
  • Check timing first: US settlement runs bi-weekly on alternate Fridays, and confirmations received after your cut-off are settled in the following cycle. That money is late, not missing.
  • New sellers in the US: the rolling delay ends once 90 days have passed since your first order shipped or was delivered and you have received $7,500. Walmart.ca’s page says $1,000.
  • A reserve is routine: Walmart calls it a normal part of selling, and one line on your statement can hold several reserves.
  • A freeze is the serious one: no funds until the freeze lifts, which Walmart says typically means until it finishes a review of your account, and an ongoing legal case is among the reasons Walmart lists for payment activity.

In March 2025 a seller posted on the Sellers Ask Sellers thread "Holding Sellers Money for No Reason". By their account, Walmart held their Christmas sales for about two months and then kept part of the money back as a reserve. When they asked customer service when it would come back, they say they were told to keep selling.

Other sellers in the thread thought there was more to that story, and maybe there was. But the pattern in that post is easy to recognise: the money is held, the reason is unclear, and the reply does not answer the question that was asked.

Walmart updated its Payment activities guide and its New Seller Payment Hold Policy on Marketplace Learn on 24 September 2026, and its Payout processing guide on 19 October 2026. Read together, they show that what looks like one Walmart payment hold on the Statements page can be four different things, and each one ends differently. Once you know which one you are in, the next step is usually much clearer.

Four things that can sit between a shipped order and your payout

1Reserve

A fixed amount set aside for expected refunds, chargebacks or other risks. Walmart calls it a normal part of selling. One line on the Statements page, possibly several reserves inside it.

2New seller hold

A rolling delay on a portion of your payments. In the US it ends once 90 days have passed since your first order shipped or was delivered and you have received $7,500.

3Payment hold

A delay of a set number of calendar days, counted from shipping or delivery. The money then goes out in the next settlement cycle.

4Payment freeze

No funds until the freeze lifts. Walmart says freezes typically last until it finishes a review of the account.

Walmart Marketplace US, guides last updated 24 September 2026. Walmart says these are some of its payment activities, not all of them. On Walmart.ca the new seller hold ends after 90 days and $1,000 in payments, not $7,500.

Why does Walmart hold seller payments?

Walmart pays on a schedule, and then layers risk controls on top of that schedule. It helps to keep the two apart.

The schedule first. Walmart’s Payout processing guide says your payout frequency is set when your account is approved, and that payout generally happens biweekly, every 14 days, unless alternate arrangements are made. It also says that in most cases you are paid in the payout cycle after the order ships or is delivered, about 28 days after.

So a gap of around four weeks between a shipped order and the money is what Walmart itself describes as the usual case. If you are used to a faster payout rhythm elsewhere, that alone can look like a hold when it is not one.

Then the risk controls. Walmart’s Payment activities guide describes reserves, holds and freezes, and the New Seller Payment Hold Policy adds a rolling delay for new sellers. Each sits on top of the normal cycle, so a hold can push a payment into a later settlement date.

The guide also lists eight high-level reasons a payment activity can apply:

  • Compliance
  • Customer orders
  • Payment service provider
  • Performance or risk reviews
  • Shipping
  • Anticipated invoices
  • Unusual transactions
  • Legal

On legal, Walmart writes: "Your payments will be suspended if there's an ongoing legal issue or case on your seller account." The questions at the foot of that guide name a temporary restraining order, a litigation case, California Proposition 65 and a UCC lien. Those are legal matters, so if one applies to you, the person to talk to about it is a lawyer.

Is it a payment hold, a reserve or a freeze?

The Statements page does not separate them for you. Walmart says reserves "will appear on the Statements page as one line item, but your reserve total may comprise multiple reserves for different purposes." So the number you are looking at may not match any single cause, and trying to reconcile it to one may not work.

In Walmart’s own terms, the four are:

  • Reserve: a fixed amount set aside to cover expected refunds, chargebacks or other risks. Walmart describes seeing one as "a normal part of selling on Walmart Marketplace." Sellers importing through Walmart Cross Border may also see a reserve for shipments in progress.
  • New seller hold: a rolling delay, meaning a portion of your payments is held back. It starts the day of your first shipped or delivered order.
  • Payment hold: a delay for a specified number of calendar days, counted from when the order shipped or was delivered. When it ends, the funds go out in the next scheduled settlement cycle, not that day.
  • Payment freeze: payments are temporarily suspended and nothing arrives until the freeze is lifted. Walmart says freezes vary in length and typically last until a review of your account is completed.

The one that catches the calendar is the payment hold. Walmart says orders become eligible for payment holds "seven or more days after the order has been shipped or delivered," and when the hold ends the money still waits for the next settlement date. Walmart’s own summary is that, depending on the hold, it "can take up to a month or more to receive funds after an order was shipped or delivered."

A hold ends on a day, the money moves on a cycle
  1. Ship or deliver

    Confirmation reaches Walmart

Received after your cycle’s cut-off, it settles in the following cycle.

  2. If a hold applies

    Calendar days of hold

The hold timeframe begins after the order has shipped or been delivered.

  3. Hold ends

    Wait for the next cycle

Funds are processed on the next scheduled settlement date, not the day the hold ends.

What to check first when a Walmart payment is late

The first checks take minutes and need nobody’s help, and each one rules something out before you open a case, so they come first.

  1. The cut-off. Walmart says your settlement cut-off depends on your payment cycle, which you can find under Payment Information on the Statements page in Seller Center. Shipment notices or delivery confirmations received after the cut-off are settled in the following cycle. If your orders were confirmed late, the money is likely in a later cycle rather than missing.
  2. Your payout details. Walmart pays through the Marketplace Wallet or an approved payout service provider, and says ACH direct deposit payouts to your bank account are not available. It also says it is not responsible for delays caused by incorrect information given at setup or in later changes. A changed bank account or a provider mismatch is worth ruling out early, because it is a cause you can fix yourself.
  3. Time since your first shipped order. In the US, the new seller rolling delay applies until 90 days have passed since your first order shipped or was delivered and you have received $7,500 in payments (on Walmart.ca, 90 days from your first shipped order and $1,000). If you have not met both yet, this hold applies to you, and it ends on Walmart’s clock.
  4. The reserve line. If a reserve has appeared or grown, read it first as cover for expected refunds and chargebacks, which Walmart names alongside other risks. It is worth looking at what your return and chargeback activity has done recently.
  5. A freeze. If nothing is arriving at all, this is the branch to take seriously. Work through Walmart’s eight reasons and ask which could apply to you, with legal checked properly rather than assumed away.

How a Walmart payment hold gets resolved

Walmart’s guides describe what ends three of these, though not the reserve, and none of them offers a way to end one early on request. What helps is knowing which terms apply to you.

The new seller hold

In the US, the New Seller Payment Hold Policy sets the rolling delay at up to 14 days for sellers incorporated in the United States and up to 21 days for everyone else. Both end once 90 days have passed since your first order was shipped or delivered and you have received $7,500 in payments. You have to meet both.

Walmart Canada’s New Seller Payment Hold Policy for Walmart.ca, last updated in April 2025, is built differently. It splits North American sellers (up to 14 days) from international sellers (up to 21 days), counts the 90 days from your first shipped order, and ends the hold once you have received $1,000 in payments. If you sell on both, read the page for the store you are asking about.

The US page also says, a little oddly, that the rolling delay continues "for a certain period, such as 30 days," above a table that sets a 90 day exit. We would plan on the table, since it is the part that states the conditions.

The reserve

A reserve exists to cover refunds, chargebacks and other risks that have not happened yet. Walmart does not say what reduces one, but the activity it is set aside for is the part you can influence. The payment guides we read do not say how a reserve is sized or when it reduces, so we would treat any precise figure you see elsewhere with care until you can find it on a Walmart page.

The payment hold

A hold ends when its days are up, and then waits for the next settlement date. Walmart’s Canada Payments Period and Reports page adds: "Hold is an ongoing action, and once initiated, it can be extended to multiple cycles." That is Walmart.ca’s wording. The US guide does not say whether the same applies on Walmart.com.

The payment freeze

Walmart says that when any of these payment activities applies, the account goes into review and a risk assessment follows. The Payout processing guide names high return or chargeback rates, and selling counterfeit or illegal items, as factors that may lead to a payment freeze, delays or permanent non-payment.

If the cause is legal, the case sets the timing: Walmart says payments are released on the next payment cycle once all legal cases are resolved and no other payment activities are on the account. Frustration is not new evidence, and the useful work is on whatever the review is actually about.

How to keep the next payout from surprising you

A Walmart payment hold hurts more the later you find it. A few habits make it visible in the week it starts.

  • Know your cut-off: look up your payment cycle under Payment Information once, and ship and confirm orders well before the cut-off rather than on the day.
  • Track three dates per order: shipped or delivered, the date you expect it to be paid, and the date it was actually paid. A gap between the last two is a hold you can see in week one rather than week six. If you already reconcile Amazon payouts, the same reconciliation habit from FBA shipments carries straight over.
  • Watch refunds, returns and chargebacks: Walmart names refunds and chargebacks behind reserves, and return and chargeback rates among the factors that may lead to a freeze. Walmart also runs its own performance standards, and Walmart’s seller metrics are not Amazon’s, so it is worth knowing which ones apply to you.
  • Keep payout details current: with Walmart and with your provider, because Walmart says delays from incorrect information are not its responsibility.
  • Budget for the cycle: Walmart describes about 28 days from shipping to payment as the usual case. If you are planning an expansion to a new marketplace, that working capital gap belongs in the plan, especially going into a holiday season.

I understand how this feels. The orders went out, the customers are happy, and the money is not there.

What we do through our Walmart Seller Services is the reading part: go through your Statements page and payment history with you, work out which payment activity you are looking at, and set out plainly what is in your hands and what is on Walmart’s clock. We cannot make Walmart release money faster, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we can do is help you ask the right question, about the right mechanism.

Common questions about Walmart payment holds

How long does Walmart hold payments for new sellers?

In the US, Walmart's New Seller Payment Hold Policy sets a rolling delay of up to 14 days for sellers incorporated in the United States and up to 21 days for others. Both end once 90 days have passed since your first order shipped or was delivered and you have received $7,500 in payments. Walmart.ca's own policy splits North American from international sellers, counts 90 days from your first shipped order and ends once you have also received $1,000, so read the page for the store you sell on.

Is a Walmart payment reserve a bad sign?

Not on its own. Walmart describes an account-level reserve as a normal part of selling on Walmart Marketplace, set aside to cover expected refunds, chargebacks or other risks. The reserve shows as one line on the Statements page even when it is made up of several reserves for different purposes.

How often does Walmart pay sellers?

Walmart's Payout processing guide says payout generally happens biweekly, every 14 days, unless alternate arrangements are made, and that in most cases an order is paid about 28 days after it ships or is delivered. Its Payment activities guide puts US settlement cycles on alternate Fridays at midnight Pacific.

What is a Walmart payment freeze?

It is when payments on your account are temporarily suspended and no funds arrive until the freeze is lifted. Walmart says freezes vary in length and typically last until a review of your account is completed. Its Payment activities guide lists eight high-level reasons a payment activity can apply, including performance or risk reviews and legal.

Why did my Walmart payment miss this cycle?

Check the cut-off first. Walmart says shipment notices or delivery confirmations received after your cycle's cut-off are settled in the following cycle, and the cut-off depends on your payment cycle, shown under Payment Information on the Statements page in Seller Center. A payment hold that ends just after a settlement date also waits for the next one.
